Mercury is the smallest and fastest planet in our solar system. It is often hard to see because it stays close to the sun in our sky. But there are special times each year when it looks farthest from the sun's bright light. This makes it easier to find. One of these good times is coming in June 2026.
In late May and June 2026, you can look for Mercury. Look low in the western sky just after the sun sets. It will look like a bright, steady point of light. On June 15, 2026, Mercury will reach its "greatest eastern elongation." This means it will be at its farthest distance from the sun in the evening sky. It will be about 25 degrees away. For reference, your fist held at arm's length covers about 10 degrees of the sky.
