Howling winds and lashing rains battered Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands as Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall on Monday. This powerful storm brought wind speeds of 290 kilometers per hour, which is 180 miles per hour. These winds moved over the small island of Rota, according to the US National Weather Service, or NWS. The NWS warned that this "very dangerous" storm could cause "catastrophic" damage. The ocean waves were expected to reach nearly 11 meters, or 35 feet, in height. By the early hours of Tuesday morning, Bavi had moved west over the Philippine Sea. Even though the center of the storm was moving into open water, the Guam Joint Information Center warned that Bavi could still maintain wind speeds of up to 165 miles per hour. Scientists say that climate change is making powerful typhoons more common. Rising ocean temperatures provide more energy for these storms, allowing them to grow stronger and more destructive. Bavi was classified as a super typhoon by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, or JTWC. This center is part of the US military and is responsible for monitoring tropical storms in the western Pacific. A super typhoon is defined as having winds in excess of 240 kilometers per hour. The NWS considers super typhoons to have the same destructive potential as a category four or five hurricane in the Atlantic. These are the most intense levels of storm classification, capable of causing total destruction of homes and infrastructure.
On Saipan, which is located north of Rota, wind gusts of more than 161 kilometers per hour, or 100 miles per hour, were recorded at the airport. Meteorologist Marcus Landon Aydlett shared this information with the Associated Press. He added that many people on the island were already without power. This was due to the last super typhoon, Sinlaku, which hit Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands in April. That storm killed 17 people and caused about $1.5 billion in damage. The repeated strikes from major storms are testing the resilience of these island communities.
The mayor's office in Rota, the southernmost inhabited island, published an advisory urging residents to prepare for "destructive winds." The advisory noted that "conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, making it unsafe to be outdoors." A spokesperson for Rota's mayor told AFP, "We are hanging in there. We are experiencing heavy winds and flooding." The spokesperson also added that some people had reported "major damages" to their homes and businesses. Despite the danger, residents are trying to remain calm and support one another.
For many locals, the storm threatens their livelihoods. Pinky Cubacub, a 55-year-old business owner, told AFP that she had been boarding up the windows of her eatery in Guam with $500 worth of plywood. "I cannot afford to lose so many days. It hurts," she said. "Because I just started, whatever we're making right now is just for rent, utilities, and my people, and supplies. I don't even pay myself yet." Her story highlights the economic vulnerability of small business owners who rely on tourism and daily operations.
Japanese tourist Miku Sakurai, 25, told AFP that her return flight to Tokyo on Sunday was cancelled. "We will stay in the hotel when the storm comes. I am scared," she said. Many tourists were stranded on the islands, forced to wait out the storm in hotels or evacuation centers. This disruption affects both the visitors and the local economy, which depends heavily on tourism revenue.
Guam, usually a sun-soaked tourist destination with a population of about 170,000, has opened five evacuation centers in its schools. These sites have a maximum capacity of about 1,700 people. They are primarily intended for the most vulnerable residents who lack secure housing. By 1:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, one of the evacuation sites had already reached maximum capacity, according to the island's civil defense office. The rapid filling of these centers shows the urgency of the situation.
Bavi will be the 11th category four or five tropical cyclone to hit US territory in the past decade. This number is one more than the total recorded in the prior 57 years. This sharp increase in intensity and frequency is a clear signal of changing weather patterns. A strong El Niño event, which is a periodic warming of surface water in the Pacific, is expected to push more tropical storms to higher intensities. Warmer sea surface temperatures drive more moisture into the atmosphere, which supercharges storms and makes them more dangerous. As these patterns continue, residents of the Pacific islands must adapt to a new normal of extreme weather.
