The archaeological urge to avoid premature conclusions is understandable. Gater recalls a previous instance where his team scanned a site that they suspected might contain Roman ruins. They were specifically looking for the typically straight lines of Roman roads. However, the scans picked up unusual curved features. The team was initially excited by this surprising discovery. It turned out, however, that the curves were actually the white lines of an old football pitch. The lines were created by spreading lime to mark the penalty area. This chemical changed the moisture content of the soil, which confused the radar sensors and created the illusion of ancient architecture.
Despite such past surprises, Gater says he is nervously excited about the work ahead. He has known this landscape for close to 50 years. He acknowledges that this specific dig could lead to even further exploration. He imagines that examining the rest of the wider landscape could be a 20-year project. He jokes that by the time he finishes, he will probably be using a Zimmer frame or a mobile scooter to get around. He adds that he could have the radar antenna attached to the back of that. The mystery remains hidden beneath the grass, but the scientific tools to uncover it are finally ready.
