What to expect in the new issue of Positive News magazine

Editor Tom Pattinson introduces the latest issue of Positive News magazine. This issue was published on July 8, 2026. It focuses on how sport is changing in our communities.
Going to a football match has been a major part of my life. When I was a boy, I went with my father and my brother. We watched my favorite team, Luton Town. It was a time of shouting, laughing, and cheering. More often than not, we went home feeling a little disappointed.
As I grew older, football became an activity for friends. Saturdays were built around the game. But it was never just about the score. It was a place to talk, share stories, and celebrate together. Now, I am a parent. I find myself doing what my father did. I take my own sons to the games. I watch them learn the strange, hopeful, and sometimes painful rhythm of supporting a team.
I do not watch much football on television. For me, the main attraction is the people I am with. It is a chance to be together. We step away from work, school runs, phones, and stress. We leave behind the small pressures that build up over a week. Sport gives people permission to shout, sing, and jump up and down. It allows us to talk nonsense for a few hours. On a good day, it makes us believe that everything might still turn out well.
That feeling is not unique to football. It is not unique to the United Kingdom either. Across the world, sport has long given people a place to belong. It lets them be part of something larger than themselves. However, in many places, elite sport has drifted away from the communities that built it.
