Rocket Report: Indian startup nears first launch; SpaceX's millenary milestone

Earlier in the year, I presented a list of the ten most anticipated rocket launches and landings scheduled for 2026. Alongside these predictions, I provided personal estimates regarding the probability of each event occurring before the year concluded. We are now halfway through the year, and only one mission from that initial list has been completed. That event was NASA’s Artemis II mission, which successfully launched in April. Many other critical missions have been postponed to the following year. This pattern highlights a persistent reality within the space industry: delays are extremely common. However, a few projects, such as the launch of NASA’s Roman Space Telescope, appear to be on track for imminent execution.
A pioneering commercial mission designed to repair a NASA satellite has successfully reached space. The Swift Boost Mission launched early Friday, following several previous cancellations caused by severe weather and technical malfunctions. The mission utilized the Link servicing satellite, developed by Katalyst Space Technologies. This satellite was attached to the top of a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket. The rocket was released from the cargo hold of a modified L-1011 jetliner over the Pacific Ocean.
Launch managers were forced to cancel two attempts earlier in the week. Unfavorable weather conditions around Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands prevented the jetliner from reaching its staging position. On Thursday, a technical issue with the rocket temporarily halted teams from deploying it after takeoff. Despite these significant hurdles, the mission finally proceeded successfully. This flight marked the final scheduled launch of the air-launched Pegasus rocket. The Pegasus was highly successful during the 1990s and 2000s, frequently launching small satellites for NASA and the United States military. However, its usage has declined significantly because cheaper commercial alternatives, such as those offered by SpaceX and Rocket Lab, have become popular.
Once in orbit, Katalyst’s Link satellite will spend several weeks approaching the Swift observatory. The Swift telescope, launched in 2004, is currently losing altitude due to atmospheric drag and will likely burn up in the atmosphere later this year. Swift was never engineered to be repaired in space. The Link mission aims to raise the satellite’s orbit and extend its operational life. This successful repair attempt represents a significant step forward in the field of active debris removal and satellite servicing, demonstrating that commercial entities can perform complex orbital maneuvers previously reserved for government agencies.
Skyroot Aerospace is preparing to launch its first test flight of the Vikram-1 rocket. The launch window is scheduled between July 12 and August 4. This mission will depart from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India. It marks India’s first private attempt to place a rocket into orbit, according to the Economic Times. The primary goal of this test flight is to collect critical data regarding the rocket’s performance. Engineers will meticulously study the propulsion system, stage separation mechanisms, and navigation controls. The test will also measure the vehicle’s overall performance characteristics. The launch will utilize a launch pad originally constructed for India’s government space program.
