It has been a standard insect repellent for many decades. It is one of the most effective products available. Despite its success, recent tests show a change in behavior. Yellow-fever mosquitoes, known as Aedes aegypti, can learn. They adapt to the chemical in unexpected ways.
In these experiments, mosquitoes learned to link DEET with food. This shows they can connect unpleasant smells with good rewards. They transform a negative experience into something inviting. Scientists are not sure if this happens in the wild. The wild is much more complex than a lab. We do not yet know the full ecological impact. The exact way DEET works is still somewhat unclear. Clément Vinauger, a researcher at Virginia Tech, studies this. He looks at how animal brains drive action.
