China has officially launched its first artificial intelligence (AI) data center that runs entirely on direct green electricity. This facility is located in Zhongwei, within the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Its launch marks a major milestone in how the country combines renewable energy with advanced computer infrastructure. It shows a clear commitment to using clean power for high-tech industries.
The new building is unique because it is the first AI data center in China to follow a strict wind-powered liquid-cooling standard. This means it uses wind energy directly to power its systems. It also uses advanced liquid-cooling technology. This technology helps improve energy efficiency significantly. By connecting directly to renewable power sources, the center operates on 100 percent green electricity. This avoids the need to draw from the traditional fossil-fuel-based grid.
This project is a key part of China's broader strategy. It connects the development of computing resources with clean energy production. The project supports the "Eastern Data, Western Computing" initiative. This national plan aims to move data-intensive computing tasks from the east to the west. The eastern part of China has high demand for data. However, it has limited space and energy resources. The western regions, like Ningxia, have abundant renewable energy, such as wind and solar power.
By shifting computing workloads to the west, China can reduce energy waste and lower carbon emissions. This approach helps balance regional development. It allows western areas to benefit from the digital economy. At the same time, it provides the east with the computing power it needs without overusing local resources.
