The Chosen tells the story of two teenage boys, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, growing up in 1940s Brooklyn. Though both are Jewish, they come from very different backgrounds: Reuven is modern Orthodox, while Danny is the brilliant son of a strict Hasidic rabbi. Their friendship begins as a rivalry during a heated baseball game and grows into a deep bond that challenges their beliefs about faith, family, and their own futures. The novel explores the tension between tradition and modern life, and the difficult choices young people must make between their parents' expectations and their own dreams.
